2013 Africa Pavilion Ambassadors

Each year a number of people of African heritage are selected as ambassadors for the Folklorama African Pavilion. ACOMI is proud to announce the following selected individuals as ambassadors at the 2013 Folklorama Festival. The 2013 festival will be held from 4th August - 17th August with the Africa Pavilion operating from 4th August - 10th August i.e. the first week of the festival.

Diana Lughas

 Diana Lughas - Nigeria

  Diana is 20 years old. She was born and raised in Winnipeg by her parents who hail from Nigeria. She will be representing Nigeria at this year's Folklorama festival in Winnipeg. she is fluent in English.

Diana is in third year university at the Faculty of Diana LughasSocial Work. Afterwards, she plans to complete a masters degree. She enjoys dancing, music, travelling and spending time with family. She is also interested in sports, fashion and learning new things.

Diana has volunteered at the Children's Museum in Winnipeg, Boys and Girls club, Youth Council, Youth and Philantropy, PowerUp program, Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, Winnipeg Folk festival and at her church.

She has been an Africa Pavilion volunteer since 1998 as a performer, helping in the kitchen, with the VIP/Bus Tour team and she was a Africa pavilion Youth Ambassador in 2007.

She hopes to present herself "as a role model for younger generations". Diana says over the years she has "grown and learned so much about Africa and about the Folklorama festival" and she hopes to share her knowledge with others.


Diana is the 2013 Africa Pavilion Female Adult Ambassador.
 

Jennie Gorvie

 Jennie Gorvie - Sierra Leone

 Jennie Gorvie was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jennie GorvieHer father is from Sierra Leone and her mother is from Kenya.


She's been a student at St. Norbert Collegiate and loves to play soccer, basketball, and paint African flags.


Jennie’s favorite book is Anne Frank and her favorite TV show is the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. She also loves listening to music from all over Africa. Jennie was a Africa Pavilion Youth Ambassador in 2010.

Jennie is the 2013 Africa Pavilion Female Adult Ambassador.

Miriam Temesghen

 Miriam Temesghen - Eritrea

Miriam was born and raised in Winnipeg. Her parents are originally from Eritrea and she would be representing Eritrea at the 2013 Africa Pavilion.Miriam Temesghen

Miriam visited Eritrea in 2002 and in 2012. She is fluent in English. She is currently in Grade 12 at Dakota Collegiate here in Winnipeg.

Miriam plans to go to university and become a pharmacist. she like to "hang-out" with her friends and family and she likes to travel. She has been volunteering at the Africa Pavilion since 2004 as a performer with the Eritrean Cultural group.

As an ambassador, she hopes to show that there's "lots of diversity in our culture" and "show the public a posiitive image of Africa". She also "wants to be a positive role model, have a new experience and some fun".

Miriam is the 2013 Africa Pavilion Female Youth Ambassador.
 

Kwame Bonsu

 Kwame Bonsu - Ghana

Kwame was born and raised in Winnipeg. He is of Ghanaian heritage. He visited Ghana in 2002. Kwame speaks English French and Twi.

He is in Grade 11 at Miles Macdonell Collegiate where he's involved in the student council, yearbook committee, debate club and the badminton team.Kwame Bonsu

Kwame plans to go to university and become a pharmacist or doctor. He likes reading, learning and travelling. His favorite sports are tennis, volleyball and basketball.

Kwame volunteers at the YMCA-YWCA and his church. He has been an Africa Pavilion volunteer since 2000 as a performer, in the kitchen and VIP/Bus Tour team member.

Kwame would like to be an ambassador to "learn about other people's cultures" while sharing his own. He would also like to "create new friendships and connections with others.";


Kwame is the 2013 Africa Pavilion Male Youth ambassador.
